In partnership with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED), the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN in New York and the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN in New York

“Parliamentary Support in Re-Establishing Trust and Reputation in Multilateral Governance”

21 September 2024, from 4 to 5.15 pm, Room CR3, UNHQ, New York

In a bilateral meeting on 17 April 2024, UNSG Guterres urged the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) to actively engage with the forthcoming UN Summit of the Future. Head of Delegation Hon. Roque, on behalf of PAM President H.E. Hon. Mayara, assured the UNSG of PAM’s full commitment to the objectives of the Summit. These objectives are also of fundamental importance for reinforcing peace and security in the PAM regions. In addition, PAM was already actively contributing towards the preparatory process of the Summit and was ready to organize a dedicated high-level parliamentary side-event for the occasion.

The side-event, organized jointly with the PAM Centre for Global Studies (CGS), in partnership with the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED), the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN in New York and the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN in New York, aims at advancing the strategic goals of the Summit in enhancing parliamentary and governmental cooperation on critical global challenges and reinvigorating the multilateral system of governance, providing decision-makers with the key information needed to exercise their national oversight on the outcomes of the Summit, as well as foster the implementation of the Pact for the Future, at both the national and regional levels.

The side-event, open to all, will focus on two elements: a) parliamentary role in rebuilding trust and reputation in international governance and b) providing reference parliamentary principles for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. On that occasion, PAM President, H.E. Hon. Enaam Mayara, also President of the House of Councilors of the Kingdom of Morocco, will announce the establishment of a Permanent Parliamentary Observatory of the Global South for the Sustainable Development Goals, to be based in and managed by Morocco, and of a Permanent Parliamentary Observatory on the Malicious Use of AI and innovative technologies, to be serviced by PAM’s Center for Global Studies (CGS).
