The work of the 2nd Standing Committee on Economic, Social and Environmental Cooperation presented at PAM 17th Plenary Session

1 March 2023, Rabat, Morocco - In the afternoon of March 1, Hon. Karim Darwish (Egypt), President of the 2nd Standing Committee, chaired the session dedicated to the work of this committee in 2022.

 

Opening addresses were pronounced by H.E. Prof. Mahmoud Abu Zeid, President of the Arab Water Council of Egypt; Dr. Said El Hachimi, Head of Parliamentary & IGOs Partnerships and Outreach at the World Trade Organization (WTO), and Hon. Giulio Centemero, Co-Chair of the PAM Panel on Trade and Investments.

 

The Reports and Resolutions of the 2nd Standing Committee were presented by Hon. Dejan Đurović (Montenegro), on behalf of Hon. Dragan Krapović (Montenegro), and by Hon. Graziella Galea (Malta).

 

The debate on the resolutions addressed a variety of issues, such as food and energy security, open energy market, free trade, and the need to make cities safer and more resilient.

 

Many delegates expressed their concerns about Climate Change impacts and agreed on the need to strengthen further cooperation among countries, and adopting a proactive approach to all crises, whether political or health, as well as implement and enforce immediate and concrete policy actions for the adaptation to Climate Change.

 

Hon. Gabriel Amard (France), PAM Rapporteur on the Right to Water Access and Sanitation, and Hon. Adele Tonnini (San Marino), PAM Rapporteur on Environmental Crimes, presented their work and plans  to these topics.

 

To conclude, Dr. Alessandro Ortis, Co-chair of the PAM Panel on Trade and Investments, did a focus on the proposed Parliamentary Energy Community, aimed at facilitating the achievement of security, affordability and sustainability of energy supply and environmental systems in the PAM regions.

 

Resolutions on “The outcome of COP27 and the impact of Climate Change” and “ Economic consequences of the COVID Pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine” were adopted unanimously.//
