PAM participates in a preparatory meeting of the UN Summit of the Future at UNOV

1 March 2024, Vienna, Austria – Amb. Peter Schatzer, PAM Permanent Observer to the UN and other International Organizations in Vienna, participated and contributed to a meeting with Ms. Michèle Griffin, Director of the Summit of the Future / Common Agenda Team in the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General (UNSG).

The meeting aimed at sharing progress with Permanent Missions on the UNSG’s Our Common Agenda, and the process paving the way to the Summit of the Future, scheduled to take place in September 2024, at UNHQ in New York.

The Summit, which will be organized, following the request of Member States to the UNSG, has the purpose, among others, to reestablish trust and confidence in the multilateral system, and provide an answer on how the international community can effectively address common security challenges, in an unprecedented context of terrible humanitarian crises and global confrontation.

The outcome of the Summit is to adopt a Pact of the Future, focused on five main areas of cooperation: Sustainable Development and Financing; International Peace and Security; Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Cooperation; Youth Empowerment; and Transforming Global Governance. Annexes to the Pact will be a “Global Digital Compact” and a “Declaration on Future Generations”.

PAM, a Permanent Observer to the UN General Assembly since 2009, is actively involved in all preparatory sessions and discussions related to the Summit of the Future, and will be working, in cooperation with its Member Parliaments, with  national delegations involved in the negotiation process, to ensure that the key mandate entrusted to parliamentarians and parliamentary diplomacy in promoting and supporting international peace and stability is duly exercised. //
